Wow, that is quite the wreck. Glad theyre  relatively alright. I hit a deer last week and hit the brakes but did not touch the steering wheel. I’ve heard too many stories like this about people trying to save the animals. Love animals, but the potential of rolling is too great.

Possible that the way the car hit, it deformed the area holding the door during one roll and then ripped the door open during the subsequent roll.

This is exactly why I wasn’t angry at all about a car bottom full of deer guts yesterday. Far better to deal with that aftermath than this.

Now moose are a different story - definitely, definitely swerve for moose.

Kinja'd!!!4

I hit 2 deer in 3 years on the same road on my old commute. Both times I had over 10 year old cars and hit at 60mph. The first car (VW Golf) I bent the hood back and kept driving it for another 2 years. The second car (Saab 92x) was totaled, but with only front end damage and I was fine. The key is just to hit them dead on rather than swerving and risking a roll like these guys did, which was easy in my case because both times they jumped out in front of me with no time to react . I’m glad they made it out ok, that car looks scary but it clearly did it’s job

I agree with the not swerving part, but not the dead-on part. You want a glancing blow, maybe it’ll dent the hood and fender depending on vehicle, but you’ll be much more likely able to drive away with minimal/no damage.

Source: 8 deer in the past 2 years, and I’ve got the dents to prove it.

Hit 2 deer in older vehicles. Drove both of them home, replaced a few parts up front and went about my business.

Contrast that with my grandpa who’s hit 3 deer with newer vehicles. 2 out of the 3 were totaled, the 3rd was almost totaled.

IMO, lack of crumple zones are better for hitting deer and the like, usually far less damage occurs.

Well, it’s not like the Equinox is ancient and horribly unsafe. It might be a good idea to build a headache rack behind you though, so all your tools don’t come for a visit up front in case of an accident.

I’m actually starting to question how long I’ll be willing to haul my kids in my truck, now that the rockers are rusting out. I’m thinking about having them cut out and replace d , and then rhino-lining from the lower body- line down.

A s of this week the RallyMetro is officially no longer road-legal. It (predictably ) failed its emissions test, and I took the insurance off of it. I only drove it to work maybe 1/2 dozen times anyways . If it survives rallycross long enough to be run in next year’s Illinois Gambler, then I’ll have to buy a 7-day drive-away permit from the DMV for the event. My wife is convinced it will live forever :)

We don’t have moose in Missouri. They are starting to introduce elk. But that’s far away for now. ( and when the elk calf was born, was poached after a few weeks.... assholes everywhere.)

I’d probably still hit a elk head on/ not turn. Just left air bags and safety tech do what it was designed to do.

I tell you what, I ran over a squirrel and a pigeon at different times but only knew because of the thrashing in the rear view mirror.

I’ve hit a deer in a work truck once too and once in my old metro (half my fault for honking & startling)

But through those it’s more of a “what happens, happens” . Than a intervention. I’ve hit a few flying birds too but it’s one of those thing where nature runs its course. It sucks.

Elk are a bit smaller, but m oose have weak legs and stand pretty tall, so if you clip them, they end up coming through the windshield. Given that they can be up to 1000-1500 pounds, I’d stand on the brakes and try to slide by on the non-antlery side. Crashes are usually fatal, seatbelts don’t really help if the roof doesn’t hold, and sometimes the impact of the legs isn’t enough to blow the airbags .

It’s a bit better now thanks to pedestrian regulations, the higher beltlines seem to help launch the moose over the vehicle where most of the time 20 years ago, especially with cars, you’d see them land on the windshield and front half of the roof .

A lot of people get caught out when they see a moose standing by the side of the road. They often bolt when the car gets close, so if you see one you need to slow way down. Unfortunately they are very active at night, which doesn’t help matters.

Some guidance/facts from Newfoundland, which has an enormous amount of moose (125,000 or so in an area about 2/3rds the size of Missouri).

In high school we used to entertain ourselves by purposefully spinning out at rural farm intersections. We’d often wind up in the ditch, pop it into 4wd, and drive back out. It was juvenile fun, but it also really teaches you how to deal with spins.
